LAST NIGHT

John and I had a long night together. He had woken up so early in the morning and left with his briefcase while I was still in bed, rolling with the duvet and reminiscing about what we did before the sun rose.

I watched him as he dressed up for the emergency work he had mentioned. I wished he could stay a bit longer with me on the cool bed. “He’s gone.” I smiled, got up, and felt a slight headache, so I walked to the kitchen to get a drink before heading out.

After a few minutes in the shower, I excitedly limped back to the bedroom like a toddler, picked out my favorite red dress, and applied some light makeup.

While admiring my reflection in the mirror, which had John’s and my picture glued to it, the romantic moments we shared last night flooded my mind. I couldn't stop smiling, still feeling John's touch on my skin.

I shook off the thoughts, grabbed my car key, and stepped out of the house.

While driving, I noticed a crowd gathered around someone lying in a pool of blood. Alarmed, I quickly stopped the car and ran to the middle of the crowd.

Shockingly, the woman on the ground was wearing the exact same dress as me, and her shoes matched mine perfectly.

Confused, I wondered how on earth a dead person could resemble me so much. I asked the person standing next to me, but to my utter shock, they ignored me.

Everyone around me acted as if I didn’t exist. People passed through me as if I were invisible.

As I stood there bewildered, a car pulled up, and John stepped out. He rushed over and cradled the body on the ground.

Stunned, I asked myself, “What business does John have with this person?” I ran toward him, shouting, “Honey? Look at me!”

But John didn’t respond; he was too busy crying and shaking the lifeless body.
