Lend vs Borrow...Jan 14, 2023

Lend and borrow, are two English words whose usage are often interchanged. In this article, I will be shedding light on the usage of these words and explain how they can be used rightly.

Lend' means to allow something be used by someone temporarily with a condition that it will be returned. This in simple terms, means β€œto give out something just temporarily.” Examples: β€œI lent Dave my notebook yesterday.” β€œI can only lend you my car if you promise to return it in good condition.” β€œI will lend you the novel when next I see you.” As a guide from the texts above, when next you want to give something to someone temporarily, do not forget to use the word 'lend'.

β€˜Borrow’ on the other hand, means to receive something from someone temporarily with the expectation of returning it. In other words, receiving with intentions of giving it back. Examples: β€œI borrowed the head warmer from my neighbor.” β€œI do not like borrowing things from people.” β€œI would have borrowed the book from you if I knew I would miss a class.” The next time you want to receive something from someone temporarily with hopes of returning it, remember to use the word 'borrow'. Whenever you are in doubt of which of these words to use, replace the chosen word with its synonym (collect/give) and find out if it fits perfectly or not.
