Parts of Speech in The English Language

Word Classes...
Scholars argue of how many parts of speech we have, generally it's 8. Most cases (higher institution) 9, & even some goes as far as saying there's 14.

Additionally, they are not limited to "Determiners" Because determiners helps to indicate additional information about a particular noun. They come before nouns to provide additional information or to either introduce them & they're small words. e.g "This book". Determiners are modifying words..

NOUN

Nouns give titles to places, ideas, people & things. They're considered to be naming words.. e.g Philip, Lagos, Colombia, December, Lecturer, Pen, book.

CLASSIFICATION OF NOUNS

CONCRETE NOUNS {objects that can be felt, heard, seen}. Duster, pot, stone.

PROPER NOUNS {Important places, days of the week.} January, Canada.

COMMON NOUNS {Ordinary things, concept & object}. Actor, woman, hill.

ABSTRACT NOUNS {Imaginary things} hunger, death, truth, pain, relief.

COLLECTIVE NOUNS {Implies mass, group or togetherness} team, audience, congregation.

COUNTABLE & UNCOUNTABLE {Determines if they can or can't be counted}. Chairs, Tables, Furniture, Water, rice, sand.

POSSESSIVE NOUNS {Ownership} "company's" worker. "Daddy's" house. "Kiki's" investment.

PRONOUNS

They're used as the replacement of a noun, to also avoid unnecessary repetitive nouns.

PERSONAL PRONOUN {represent definite things or persons} Mine, you, her, she.

POSSESSIVE PRONOUN {laying emphasis, show possession} Our, My, Their.

RECIPROCAL PRONOUN {Expression, exchange of action, interactive} Each other, one another.

REFLEXIVE PRONOUN {reflects back or to} Itself, ourselves, himself.

RELATIVE PRONOUNS{refers to other pronoun or noun, called it's anticident}who, which, whom..

DEMONSTRATIVE PRONOUNS{direct attention to specific things} this, that, these.

INTERROGATIVE PRONOUNS {made up of 'wh' words} why, when, who.

INDEFINITE PRONOUNS{neither definite or specific} All, Everyone, Few, Little, Several.

IMPERSONAL PRONOUNS{refer people in general or to an undefined person} I, nowadays, They.

VERB

Expresses action, event or state. "Doing word".

VERB PHRASE {verb is composed with 2 or more words} are working, have been, must have..

AUXILIARY VERB{help verbs express their meaning clearly} could, would, dare, may, can't.

LEXICAL VERB{stand & function alone} wrote, washed, won.

FINITE VERB{controlled by a subject} NON-FINITE{not affected by the person, number of subject}

TRANSITIVE & INTRANSITIVE {transitive followed by an object in it's sentence, intransitive isn't followed by an object} Trans=Threw, Wrote. Intrans= Laughed, Smiles.

IRREGULAR VERB {don't have present tenses, infinitive or regular d or ed to their base}..

ADVERB

Modifies and adds to the verb. Describe verbs, adjectives, other adverbs.

ADJUNCTS {extent the action is performed} slowly, quickly, far.

DISJUNCTS {expresses viewpoint, attitude} foolishly, certainly, luckily.

ADJECTIVE

gives more info about pronouns or noun. Adds life & color to language. tall, short, heavy.

CONJUNCTION Links other clauses, phrases & sentences together. In addition, therefore.

PREPOSITION Relationship between 2 words or phrases in a sentence. During, Since, Towards, within.

INTERJECTION Expresses & shows intense feelings, anger, disgust or joy. Aha! Never! Wow!

Phrase: Does not contain finite verb, (Finite verb agrees with the subject in person and in number). Clause: Has its own subject & verb.
