Words in English, language can be identified in distinct ways like their pronunciation and spelling. However, a few words may not follow this pattern as they sound different and have unimaginable spellings.

There are quite a lot of words that will leave you in shock about their origin as English words, and I will be listing 5 of them with their meanings.

Elysian.

Elysian originated from Greek and it describes a heavenly feeling.

Example: My dream wedding must come with an elysian vacation.

Abendrot.

Abendrot is a word of German origin which means the red colour of the sky around the time of sunset. Next time you're out admiring the red colour at sunset, call it an Abendrot and pronounce it as /ˈaːbəntroːt/. Example: I spent a blissful time out watching the abendrot.

Selcouth.

Selcouth is an adjective used in times past to describe something strange, unfamiliar or rare. It is one of those fancy words whose use has been reduced over time.
