TYPES OF CONCORD

1: Grammatical Concord:

This term is used to describe the grammatical relationship between the subject/person and it's verb in number. SS=SV. Example

a. Daddy DRIVES carefully.

b. Uncle KIlLLED a cow.

Please note that there are exceptions to every rule not limited to grammatical concord, the use of 'with', 'together with', and 'as well as'.

b. The lecturer together with the student is in the HOD'S office.

c. The men with their wives have been arrested. (The men is in the plural form , so it's verb is plural "have").

d. The radio station as well as it's staff has been vindicated. (Singular noun irrespective of the link with "it's staff" takes a singular Verb).

-The use of apart from/different from.

-When an expression comprises of two (or more) names which refer to the same person is treated as a singular subject & given a singular verb.

-A plural noun must have a singular verb when it is the name of a singular object. (Title of a book)..

-Minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, years, decades & centuries take the singular verb.

-Words that appear in plural form but bear singular meaning should take singular verbs.

2: Notional Concord:

This draws the attention of the notion of the writer to the speaker. It is the agreement of verb with the subject. EXAMPLE

a.Team A meets Team B this afternoon.

b. The public has been pacified. (The public is a singular subject as it refers to the group as an entity, so it takes a singular verb "has".

3: Concord of Proximity:

This means nearness or closeness. It states that the action is important, any two subjects (in an alternation) to the verb will determine wether the verb is singular or plural. EXAMPLE

a. Either the students or the teacher is in the classroom. ('the teacher" singular, the verb therefore is singular).

b. Neither you nor I am guilty.

c. Neither the child nor the parents are guilty.

d. Either the teacher or the students are in the class.
